I arrived at KSCL in the fall of '94 when Aaron Hoppe and Dr. Peek were starting to revamp the place from its poster- and graffiti-laden, completely unorganized state. I remember walking in and seeing stacks upon stacks of records on the floor. I asked Aaron what I could do and he said, jokingly, "You can sort all those records." So I did, and from that point on, my daily dose of KSCL became greater every semester.
'95-'96 we had Hoppe as station manager again (although he wasn't around much...) and Steve "Stump" Moffatt as music director. This was when the real stories began. Second semester, there was a commercial radio convention in New Orleans. No need for us to attend, but there was a great line-up of concerts related to the convention, and since Steve had made friends with certain record company types, we got to attend. Lucky me, I got to see Marilyn Manson at a tiny club that made me so close to him that I had nightmares for a week afterwards. It was worth it, though, because we also got to see Pop Will Eat Itself on one of their final tours. The other great story from that trip involves some people from Warner Bros. Records, a tour bus, and a prospective trip to Las Vegas that made us all wonder... how are we going to explain this one to the dean of students?
'96-'97 Stump was station manager and I was music director, with Bryan Manuel (sp?) as program director and Jon Veen as news director (who, incidentally, was news director all 4 years he was at Centenary). Stump and I had an even greater adventure that fall: to the College Music Journal (CMJ) convention in New York. Good shows, decent panels, strange keynote from Les Claypool, and even better record shopping! To my endless joy, I got to meet MCA of the Beastie Boys and get his autograph (and drawings) on a B-Boys record I had just purchased.
This was also about the time that KSCL's current station manager, Chris Brown, started hanging around the station and bribing us (most successfully, I might add) with cases of cherry Coke...
Senior year, '97-'98, Steve and I swapped jobs and added Vanessa Boyd and Tommy Welch as co-program directors. This was both the best and worst year I had at KSCL. The athletics department decided (conspired?) to have the station broadcast the school's basketball games. In addition, two athletic department staff members [whose names I don't care to remember] asked to have their own radio show. This was a fight I lost; it's a student-run, student-funded station -- why should staff member be allowed to have a show? I had other disagreements with the Centenary bureaucracy that year (including the SGA)... but we won't get into those.
Nonetheless, KSCL was the best part of my college experience. The Unclassifieds... The Squirt 'n' Stump Show... the DJ newsletter, "Potty Reading"... postponing the yearbook photo session so we could watch the "South Park" episode featuring Robert Smith... Wally Pleasant, Wally Pleasant, and more Wally Pleasant... 10,000+ pictures and drawings of cars... the "Margaritaville" controversy... and countless beloved friends made during my time there.
